The interior of the shell has cloudy waves of rainbow colours with blues and green being dominant. The shells were used by the Maori to add a gleam of life to the eyes in their carved figures. Paua live clinging to rocks at depths of 1 – 10 meters. They can be found around most of the NZ rocky shoreline. However, the larger and finer specimens are found in the cold waters around Stewart Island and Southland.

Measuring up to 15 cm (6 in) in length, the shell is round, with black spots on a white background, and is usually covered by the mantle when the cowrie is roving the sea floor and coral reefs. The natural range of this species is the western Pacific and northern Indian Oceans, at depths of 10 to 40 metres.

TROCA SHELL - Trochus sp. Within a genus of medium-sized to very large sea snails. They are marine gastropod molluscs in the family Trochidae, the top snails. Trochus niloticus, for example, is a very large ( up to 13 cm ), Indo-Pacific top shell, which has a very thick inner layer of nacre.

CAPIZ SHELL - Placuna placenta. The outer shell of the marine mollusk, Placuna placenta, found in the shallow coastal waters of the Philippines. Capiz shell is a flat, semi-transparent shell with a pearlescent appearance.
